Other Web Design Skills
... Multimedia, social media, and more
Web design requires knowledge and skills in addition to user-centered and/or interactive design theory and practice. It also requires knowledge of and skills in the use of multimedia, social media, web programming techniques, project management, Internet ethics, and visual aesthetics.
My coursework at Quinnipiac University Online covered these topics. Please click the images below for samples of my work in these areas. Please click Readings for references that inform my work.
Multimedia
Multimedia work samples include a tourism video, a Flash photo viewer and an audiovisual presentation based on Pecha Kucha presentation design principles.
Tourism Video
This tourism video, created for an audio-video class, highlights the art and history of Deep Ellum, a historic neighborhood in Dallas, Texas.
Flash Photo Viewer
This photo viewer, created for an information animation class, displays photos and captions with click-through arrows and images.
PechaKucha Presentation
This presentation was created for an advanced user-centered design class. Useful in presentations to clients and other stakeholders, PechaKucha displays images rather than text, which may be provided in handouts after the presentation. PechaKucha limits slides to 20 per presentation and slide display to 20 seconds.
Social Media
Social media work samples include a report recommending a new social media strategy for a regional arts festival and a website detailing uses of social medial for social good.
Social Media Recommendations for the IFAI
This report is the result of a semester-long effort on the part of four students, including myself. We four created a social media strategy for a summer arts festival in New Haven, Connecticut, and delivered our strategy in the form of recommendations based on user research and competitive analyses. The client was pleased with our recommendations and planned to use them "as-is."
Social Change | Social Media
This website was the result of a semester-long effort with an entire Social Media class. Our project, based on class consensus, was to research the uses of social media for social good. Another student and I collected essays written by our classmates and organized them by topic in a Google Site. We also wrote summaries for each topic and provided a glossary and other supporting information.
Web Programming Techniques
Work samples include a website redesign using CSS and webpage interactivity using jQuery.
"Zen Garden" Redesign with CSS
This work sample is the result of creating a new cascading style sheet (CSS) to reformat the presentation of the Zen Garden website. Changes are accomplished solely through CSS. No changes were made to HTML structure.
jQuery Work Sample
This work sample demonstrates webpage interactivity accomplished with jQuery. A legend (see third tab) identifies the techniques used.
Project Planning
Project management work samples include (1) a project plan for a website redesign and related social media strategy and (2) a Gantt chart of the project plan. The redesign and strategy were to be accomplished through internships, canceled due to scheduling and staffing issues.
Project Planning
This project plan documents standard project-planning information.
Gant Chart
This work sample accompanies the project plan above.
Internet Ethics & Policy
This essay covers copyright, patent, and trademark laws in relation to online content. Additional essays on Internet ethics and policy issues are posted on my blog, bytes&bricks.com.
Visual Aesthetics
This mockup demonstrates color theory and typography design principles applied in a redesign of an existing website.
